OPEN MASTER CLASSES

High-quality intensive courses with internationally renowned musicians for students, graduates and young talents of cello and double bass The Open Master Classes initiative goes back to the longed-for desire of young students to come into contact with masters of their field - to learn from them and to find better access to the orchestral and professional world. Cello and bass are string instruments that have always delighted audiences of classical music, both in chamber music and as solo instruments, and are an indispensable part of any symphony orchestra. The courses are made available to all young string players who have sufficient qualifications to learn from first-class professional musicians. They take place outside the university with alternating teachers and individual coaching. The concept is to offer such job-related intensive courses for the first time on a world scale and on a regular basis. The young musicians are made familiar with the diversity, stylistic and technical characteristics of their profession and introduced to concert practice. Teachers in the courses are internationally selected acclaimed musicians, national luminaries or unique educators who individually support and inspire their students. The course participants are shown how differently and consistently an artistic expression can be formulated and how it can be used to strengthen their own talent. Students benefit from the professionalism of the teachers, learn to play in a group they are not already familiar with and get to know colleagues in their future network. For the teachers, the courses offer a place of exchange, so to speak, to support the next generation and to find artistic stimulation by working with fresh ideas and energy.   The following courses are offered separately for the respective string instruments:

Zsuzsa Bálint comes from a Hungarian family of musicians in Transylvania (Romania) and made her debut in her hometown of Targu-Mures at the age of eleven as a soloist with an orchestra. She studied in the master class of Prof. Boris Bloch at Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen and completed her concert exam at Universität der Künste Berlin with Prof. Georg Sava. She has received various international awards as a soloist, chamber musician and best accompanist. During her studies she received a teaching position at the UdK, which she still holds today. Further lectureships followed at the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin, as well as at Hochschule für Musik Mainz and the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover. She is in demand internationally both as a soloist and as a chamber musician and has made a name for herself as a duo partner for double bass players from all over the world, including Ovidiu Badila, Janne Saksala, Esko Laine, Gunars Upatnieks, Wies de Boevé, Rick Stotijn, Dominik Wagner, Andrés Martín and many others with whom she plays duo recitals, gives master classes and records CD projects. Since 2014 she has been playing regular piano duo concerts as part of Kammermusiktage Ahrenshoop. As an accompanist for vocalists, she has been working with Burkhard von Puttkamer for many years, with whom she gives recitals as part of the festival „Zwischenakt - Konzerte an ungewöhnlichen Orten“. She is the official accompanist and a frequent co-organizer at numerous competitions, master classes and festivals, including Internationale Instrumentalwettbewerb Markneukirchen, Deutsche Musikwettbewerb des Deutschen Musikrates and the solo competitions of the BassEurope Academy. Since 2005 she has also been a permanent pianist at Carl-Flesch-Akademie in Baden-Baden and a guest artist at Mattheiser Sommerakademie in Bad Sobernheim. In 2019 she played at the International Society of Bassists at the Indiana Music School Bloomington, for Bass Europe in: Berlin, Prague and Lucca. She started her own series of master classes for strings, Open Master Classes (OMC), in November 2021. Radio and television recordings as well as CD productions document her artistic work: Deutschlandradio, SWR and Radio Romania Bucharest broadcast her concerts live. For the Bavarian Radio she played as a soloist with Bamberger Symphoniker under the direction of Karl-Heinz Steffens. A CD co-production was made with her own arrangements of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and Swan Lake suites. With her ensemble of three pianos she recorded a CD with film music arrangements. Her most recent CD with the double bass player Waldemar Schwiertz (Gewandhaus Leipzig/ Prof. Uni Mainz) with sonatas by Adolf Misek is in the works. In addition to her pedagogical interest, experimental projects such as the three-piano ensemble “Xinowa Sej”, which she co-founded, and South American music, above all tango, offer her creative balance. Participation in various tango formations and active cooperation with composers from Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Germany, including above all Saúl Cosentino, Andrés Martín, Pablo Ardouin Shand and Judith Brandenburg, inspired her to start her own tango solo project. which, in addition to its own arrangements, also includes some world premieres.
